Welcome to Dioxin 2000

On behalf of the organizing and advisory committees, I would like to welcome you to Monterey for the 20th International Symposium on Halogenated Environmental Organic Pollutants and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

The past 20 years have witnessed rapid advances in analytical technologies for the identification, detection and quantitation of these chemicals, and significant progress in our understanding of their biochemical and toxicological mechanisms of action. As a result, scientific, governmental and public interest in these chemicals has increased dramatically. Current research on these chemicals now encompasses a broad range of scientific disciplines, from analytical and environmental chemistry to molecular biology and human health. The 20th Symposium will showcase recent advances in research on organohalogen compounds and POPs, including relevant environmental endocrine disruptors. It will also provide participants working in these diverse scientific areas with a unique opportunity to interact and discuss these issues. Each day of the Symposium will begin with a plenary lecture, followed by oral presentations in special and general sessions on a variety of topics, and will conclude with poster presentations. In addition to the scientific sessions, we have arranged memorable social events for participants and accompanying persons.

Dioxin 2000 will be held at the Hyatt Regency Resort and Conference Center in Monterey, California. Monterey, which in its early days was the capital of the Spanish territory of California, is a historic town situated on the southern most curve of the Monterey Bay. Monterey and its surrounding area offer some of the most dramatic and beautiful coastlines in the world as well as a diversity of sites and attractions. Thus, in addition to an interesting and stimulating Symposium, participants will have ample opportunities to relax and enjoy the sights in and around Monterey.

Welcome to Monterey. I look forward to having you attend and present your recent results in this, the 20th anniversary of the Dioxin Conference.
